Choosing a watch winder safe: a collector’s buying guide
A watch safe should match both the protection your collection needs and the way you use it. How many watches would you like to keep running? How much space do you need for manually wound pieces, jewellery and documents? Does your insurer require a particular safe rating? Start with these questions before choosing a finish or the number of winders.
How many watch winders does your collection need?
The number of watches you own does not necessarily equal the number of winding modules you need. A collector with twenty watches may choose twelve winders for frequently worn automatics and storage for the remaining pieces. A smaller collection may need more active modules if several calendars or other complications are best kept set for everyday use.

Compare quotations on the same basis: winding modules, storage, construction, certification, locks and installation. Weight and dimensions can change between an Essential version and a certified version of the same model. Your quotation should identify exactly which configuration will be supplied.
Which safe certification and protection level should you choose?
A luxury finish, a biometric reader and substantial weight do not establish a burglary-resistance grade. If your policy requires a certified safe, check the standard, grade and certificate for the exact model and configuration being offered.

Mercier & Fils offers EN 1143-1 certified versions on request, depending on model and configuration. For the relevant Régent models, the grade affects construction, weight and price. Ask for the documentation for your chosen version before confirming the order.
Biometric access, keypads and certified locks
BioLock® provides fingerprint access on equipped models. Certified configurations can use a different system: the relevant Régent product specifications identify a Digilock® PS610 lock certified to EN 1300 Grade B. Your quotation should state the main lock, backup opening methods and power requirements. Do not assume every version has the same combination.
Ask your insurer to approve the configuration
Cover depends on your country, policy and the protection measures your insurer accepts. No single insured value is automatically guaranteed by a safe grade. Before buying, provide the value you need to protect and obtain written confirmation of the required standard and grade, anchoring conditions, any alarm requirements and the documents you must retain.
For an international purchase, have the proposed certification reviewed against your local policy. Do not treat different national ratings as interchangeable. Keep copies of your inventory, purchase records, certificates and installation documents in a separate location. Review cover when the collection changes significantly.
Burglary resistance and fire protection are separate
EN 1143-1 is not a fire certification. If fire protection is part of your requirements, ask for separate evidence identifying the class, test duration and intended contents. A class designed for paper documents does not guarantee that every component of a watch will survive a fire unharmed.

Integrated winders for watches ready to wear
A conventional safe stores watches; a watch winder safe can also keep selected automatic watches running when they are not being worn. This is useful when alternating between several pieces or avoiding frequent calendar adjustments. A winder does not replace servicing or the watch manufacturer’s instructions.
Set each module to suit the movement: turns per day, or TPD, and clockwise, counterclockwise or bidirectional winding. A single setting for an entire watch brand may be insufficient. Mercier & Fils modules can be adjusted independently to match each watch’s programme.

Where should you install a watch safe?
A suitable location combines discretion, everyday access and practical feasibility. A dressing room, study or dedicated collection room may work if the floor, delivery route, door opening and electrical supply are suitable. Reconsider locations exposed to damp conditions or readily visible from outside.
- Measure the entire delivery route: entrances, doors, corridors, turns, stairs and lifts, including handling clearances.
- Confirm load capacity: exact weight depends on configuration. Have a competent professional assess the supporting structure, particularly on upper floors.
- Allow for opening: the door, modules and drawers must remain accessible without conflicting with surrounding furniture.
- Plan anchoring: follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your insurer’s conditions. Weight alone does not automatically remove the need for anchoring.
- Plan the power supply: socket position, cable routing and access for maintenance. Any modification to the safe must be approved before work begins.
Choose a dry, temperate room away from heat sources and large temperature changes. If the safe is being built into cabinetry, confirm operating clearances before the furniture is made. Convenient access helps make secure storage part of your everyday routine.
A safe forms part of the home’s wider protection arrangements; it cannot provide absolute protection against every form of theft. Avoid sharing images that reveal its location or identify access routes to your home.

Can you put a watch winder in an existing safe?
Yes, provided the usable space, power supply and operating conditions suit the winder. Check clearance with the door closed and access to its controls. Do not drill a certified safe to route a cable without the manufacturer's approval: modifications must preserve the conditions of its certification.
