Why an automatic watch stops
Every automatic movement works on the same principle: a rotor, linked to wrist movement, winds a spring housed in the barrel. This spring gradually unwinds to power the gears. When it's depleted, the watch stops.
This is called the power reserve - the maximum autonomy of a watch at rest, without wearing or manual winding.
It varies significantly from one caliber to another:
- Rolex cal. 3235 (Datejust, Submariner Date, Sea-Dweller) : 70 hours
- AP Royal Oak cal. 3120 : 60 hours
- Omega Seamaster cal. 8800 : 55 hours
- Patek Philippe cal. 240 (Calatrava automatic) : minimum 48 hours
In practice: if you wear your Royal Oak Monday to Friday and leave it on the weekend, it will likely stop Sunday morning. No need to panic - this is its normal operation.
A stopped automatic watch is not a warning sign. It's simply the power reserve reaching its end.
How to wind an automatic watch
The procedure is straightforward. Four steps, in order.
1. Unscrew the crown if it's screw-down (Rolex, Omega Seamaster, AP Royal Oak Offshore…). Never force it. Turn counterclockwise until you feel a click.
2. Turn the crown clockwise, in the winding position (position 0 or 1 depending on the caliber). About twenty turns are enough to recharge the barrel sufficiently and restart the movement.
3. Never wind the watch on your wrist. The risk of twisting on the winding stem is real, especially on screw-down crown watches. Hold the watch in your free hand.
4. Screw the crown back carefully before putting the watch back on your wrist - the water resistance depends on it.
Once restarted, the watch recharges itself through wrist movement. The rotor spins in both directions and continuously powers the barrel. Daily wear of six to eight hours is generally sufficient to maintain a full power reserve.
The difference between manual winding and wearing on your wrist? The result is identical - only the energy source changes. Manual winding is simply faster to restart a stopped automatic watch.
What repeated stops do to your watch
A single stop poses no problem. Frequent and prolonged stops are another story.
Watch oils age independently of wear. According to Moebius specifications - the reference for Swiss manufacturers - modern lubricants last 5 to 7 years in a closed movement. But this period elapses whether the watch is worn or not.
Prolonged immobility aggravates two phenomena:
- Migration : under the effect of gravity and capillary forces, the oil gradually leaves its application area. The pivots become insufficiently lubricated, friction increases.
- Polymerization : old oils thicken, form gummy residues that slow the movement and accelerate wear.
Automatic watch maintenance recommended by manufacturers takes this into account: Omega recommends a complete overhaul every 5 to 8 years; Patek Philippe advises entrusting the watch to a service center as soon as accuracy degrades.
Complications are the most exposed. A perpetual calendar or moon phase adjusted after a prolonged stop puts correction mechanisms under non-optimal conditions. A tourbillon immobile for weeks accumulates stress on components lubricated to the micron. It's not catastrophic - but it's an additional wear factor not to be overlooked.
When a watch winder becomes essential
A watch winder is not a gadget. It's a logical response to a specific situation.
If you wear a single watch every day, you probably don't need one. The rotor does its job.
However, three situations clearly justify its use:
- You have multiple watches in rotation. The one not on your wrist stops. Each time you put it back into service, you must wind it, set the time, recalibrate complications. A watch winder keeps each piece running, ready to be worn.
- You own watches with complications. Perpetual calendar, moon phase, power reserve: these displays are difficult to correct after a stop. Some require a precise procedure, sometimes lengthy. Avoiding the stop means avoiding the manipulation.
- You travel frequently. Days without wear accumulate. A programmed watch winder maintains the rhythm without thinking about it.

Can you wind an automatic watch too often?
No. Automatic movements are equipped with a slip mechanism - also called a torque limiter - which disconnects the winding stem from the barrel as soon as the spring is fully wound. You can turn the crown indefinitely without risking breaking the spring. The only precaution: never wind on your wrist, to avoid lateral stress on the crown.
My watch stops even when I wear it — what should I do?
Several possible causes. The first: insufficient activity. Sedentary work, a day of meetings - the rotor doesn't spin enough to maintain the power reserve. Try manual winding in the morning before putting it on your wrist. If the problem persists despite active wear, the rotor or automatic winding mechanism may be faulty. It's time to take the watch to a watchmaker for diagnosis - and probably a complete overhaul if the oils are more than five years old.
Can a watch winder replace daily wear?
Yes, that's precisely its role. A properly adjusted watch winder reproduces wrist movement in a controlled manner, with the number of turns per day adapted to the caliber. It maintains the power reserve at its optimal level, without over-winding thanks to the slip mechanism built into the watch. For a collector alternating multiple pieces, it's the most coherent solution - and the most respectful of movements.
