Patek Philippe watch winder: TPD and direction of rotation settings by reference

Patek Philippe is the manufacture with the most consistent winder logic. Unlike Audemars Piguet or Omega, the rule here is almost universal: 800 TPD counter-clockwise only. This consistency is explained by the internal architecture of Patek's in-house calibers, whose winding mechanisms are optimized for unidirectional winding in the counter-clockwise direction.

Exceptions are rare and well-identified: some major complications (Minute Repeater, Grand Complication 5531) operate clockwise, some recent Nautilus and Aquanaut models with integrated chronographs switch to bi-directional, and two Ladies references drop to 650 TPD. This Mercier & Fils guide lists all references with their exact specifications.

Nautilus — points of attention

The Nautilus is the most watched collection on the market. The rule is simple: 800 TPD counter-clockwise for all variants without integrated chronograph, including pre-1991 steel models (Ref. 3800 1JA) and Nautilus 5711, 5712, 5713, 5726. Two major exceptions: Nautilus with integrated chronograph (5976 1G, 5980, 5980 1A) switch to bi-directional at 800 TPD. The Nautilus 5990 1A exceptionally drops to 650 TPD bi-directional. Nautilus watches prior to 1991 require clockwise winding — inverse mechanism of modern versions.

Aquanaut

The Aquanaut follows the same principle as the Nautilus: 800 TPD counter-clockwise as a general rule. Aquanaut references with integrated chronographs (5261R, 5268/200R, 5968R) switch to bi-directional at 700 TPD. The Aquanaut Traveltime remains counter-clockwise at 800 TPD.

Calatrava

The Calatrava is the epitome of the Patek rule: 800 TPD counter-clockwise with no notable exception, except for the Calatrava Travel Time Lady which reverses to clockwise at 820 TPD, and the Calatrava Grand Taille Caliber 315 which drops to 700 TPD counter-clockwise. All other references — from 3802 to 6007G — follow the in-house standard.

Perpetual Calendar & Full Calendar

Patek's calendar complications follow the house rule: 800 TPD left direction in almost all cases. The only exceptions are Perpetual Calendars with older calibers with inverted mechanisms (references 3974, 3979H) which require a right direction at 800 TPD. Reference 5059 with caliber 27-70 Q is also left direction at 950 TPD — the highest value in the Patek catalog.

Grand Complication & Minute Repeater

Patek Grand Complications are the most delicate case. The left direction at 800 TPD rule applies to most references (5270G, 5496P, 5940J, 5960R, 7140R). But Minute Repeater pieces (5013, 5074, 5079) and the Grand Complication 5531 G — which integrates a minute repeater — require a right direction at 800 TPD. The Grand Complication 5187G also follows the right direction. If you own a repeater piece, always check the exact reference.

FAQ

What TPD for a Patek Philippe?

The universal rule for Patek Philippe is 800 TPD in the left direction only. If you don't know your reference precisely, this setting is correct for almost the entire catalog. The only situations where you should check are: a Nautilus or Aquanaut with an integrated chronograph (BOTH 700 or 800 TPD), a Minute Repeater (right direction 800 TPD), or a Nautilus prior to 1991 (right direction 800 TPD).

What winding direction for a Patek Philippe Nautilus?

Modern Nautilus watches (post-1991) all operate in the left direction at 800 TPD, including references 5711, 5712, 5713, and 5726. Exception: Nautilus watches with an integrated chronograph (5976 1G, 5980, 5980 1A) switch to bidirectional at 800 TPD. The Nautilus 5990 drops to 650 TPD BOTH. Nautilus watches manufactured before 1991 require a right-hand winding direction — reverse winding mechanism.

What setting for a Patek Philippe Aquanaut?

The Aquanaut without a chronograph (5065, 5066, 5067, 5164, 5165, 5167, 5168, 5650, Traveltime): 800 TPD left direction. The Aquanaut with an integrated chronograph (5261R, 5268/200R, 5968R): 700 TPD bidirectional.

What TPD for a Patek Philippe Calatrava?

All Calatrava watches operate at 800 TPD in the left direction, with no notable exceptions apart from the Calatrava Travel Time Lady (right direction, 820 TPD) and the Calatrava Grand Taille Caliber 315 (left, 700 TPD). From reference 3802 to the most recent 6007 models, the standard setting applies.

Is there a specific direction for a Patek Philippe Minute Repeater?

Yes. All Patek Philippe Minute Repeaters (references 5013, 5074, 5079) operate in the right direction at 800 TPD — contrary to the general house rule. The Grand Complication 5531 G and 5187G also follow the right direction. If your Patek includes a minute repeater, it is essential to configure your watch winder in right-hand mode.
